Czech puppetry, a living tradition
Highlights
- A craft passed down through generations
- A marionette's joints, explained up close
- An art form recognised internationally
- Puppets still carved and strung by hand
- Craft explained before any performance
About this tour
This session covers a working puppetry workshop and a close look at a finished marionette, showing the craft behind an art form recognised internationally as part of the country's intangible heritage. You see the workshop where figures are still carved and strung by hand, then a finished puppet's joints and mechanism explained up close. It is a craft-focused session rather than a performance itself.
I move slowly between the two stops, since the mechanism rewards a proper explanation rather than a quick glance. Questions come as we go, and I am happy to describe a specific joint again if it is hard to see on camera. A short note on where to catch an actual performance follows afterwards.
This suits anyone interested in traditional craft or theatre history. It also works well paired with the call session for the tradition's fuller political history.

Itinerary
-
Welcome and sound check 5 min
The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Prague before heading out.
-
A puppetry workshop 15 min
The camera takes in a workshop where marionettes are still made by hand, and I explain how the craft has been passed down through generations.
-
A finished marionette 15 min
We look closely at a finished puppet, and I point out the joints and stringing that let a single figure move so expressively.
-
Your questions 7 min
Time to ask anything about Prague: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.
-
A short list to keep 3 min
Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Czech pilsner beer and Malá Strana, worth a slower look.
Good to know
- A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
- Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
- Times are shown in Prague time, so check the time where you are before you book.
- The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
- Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
- Sessions run in small groups, up to 7 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
