Dean Village, a valley below the rooftops
Highlights
- A valley below the city streets
- A carved millstone in a wall
- Red sandstone flats for mill workers
- The Water of Leith through the village
- A quiet contrast to the New Town
About this tour
This session drops into Dean Village, a former milling settlement sitting in a steep valley just below the level of the streets around it. You see a stone bridge over the Water of Leith, a carved millstone, and the red sandstone courtyard of Well Court. Kirsty explains how the village worked when its mills were still running.
After a short sound check on the bridge, the walk moves along the riverbank at a gentle pace, pausing at the courtyard for questions. Kirsty answers as you go and sends a short note afterwards on the best angle to photograph the village from.
It suits anyone who enjoys quieter corners of a city, and works well alongside a busier New Town session nearby. It also appeals to those interested in industrial history.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
