Vermeer's Delft, from the Oude Kerk
Highlights
- A tower that has leaned for centuries
- Vermeer's grave, marked simply
- A painter about whom little is written
- The church he likely knew his whole life
- History told from one small square
About this tour
This session pairs the leaning tower of the Oude Kerk with the grave of Johannes Vermeer, buried in the church he likely attended his whole life. You hear how the tower's tilt became a permanent, accepted feature of the skyline, and how little survives in writing about the painter himself. It is a short, focused history session in one spot.
We spend most of the time at the tower, since its lean photographs oddly on camera and is worth explaining properly, then move briefly to the grave marker. I keep the pace slow and take questions about Vermeer as they come. A short reading note follows by message afterwards.
It suits anyone interested in art history who wants context on Vermeer's home city. It also pairs naturally with the Delftware session, since the painter's Delft and the factory's Delft are the same streets.

Itinerary
-
Welcome and sound check 5 min
The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Delft before heading out.
-
Oude Kerk exterior 15 min
The camera holds on the church's famous lean, and I explain how the tower has tilted for centuries without ever quite falling, a fact locals mention more than they worry about it.
-
Vermeer's grave marker 15 min
Just outside, I point to the spot marking where Johannes Vermeer is buried, and explain how little is actually known about his life compared to how famous his paintings became.
-
Your questions 7 min
Time to ask anything about Delft: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.
-
A short list to keep 3 min
Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Bitterballen and Wippolder, worth a slower look.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
