About this tour

This session leaves the postcard centre for the university district of Wippolder, where most of the city's students actually live. You see ordinary residential streets and a canal-side bike route rather than churches or squares, and hear how the university has shaped the area since the 1840s. It is a quieter, more everyday side of Delft.

We move steadily through the streets, and I explain the university's history and its effect on the neighbourhood as we go. Questions about student life or the university itself come naturally, and I answer them without slowing the walk too much. A short note on the area follows by message.

It suits anyone curious about the working city behind the tourist centre. It also pairs well with a Markt session for contrast between the two halves of Delft.

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 5 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Delft before heading out.

  2. Wippolder streets 15 min

The camera moves through a residential street of student housing, and I explain how the university has shaped this part of the city since it was founded in 1842.

  3. A canal-side bike route 15 min

Along a canal used mainly by students commuting to campus, you see the sheer number of bikes parked along the water, which I explain is fairly typical for the neighbourhood.

  4. Your questions 7 min

Time to ask anything about Delft: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  5. A short list to keep 3 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Poffertjes and Binnenstad, worth a slower look.

Good to know

  • A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
  • Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
  • Times are shown in Amsterdam time, so check the time where you are before you book.
  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
  • Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 10 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
