Iveagh Gardens: Dublin's hidden Victorian garden
Highlights
- A hidden Victorian exhibition garden
- A sunken lawn and rustic grotto
- A hedge maze minutes from Grafton Street
- Design features from the 1860s
- One of Dublin's quietest green spaces
About this tour
This session looks at one of Dublin's least visited green spaces, a Victorian garden designed for a 19th-century exhibition and still largely unknown to casual visitors. You see the sunken lawn, a rustic grotto, and a hedge maze within a short walk of the busiest shopping street in the city. It stays inside the gardens throughout, moving slowly at a relaxed pace.
After a short sound check at the entrance, I walk the garden stop by stop, letting each feature sit on screen before explaining its design and history. I take questions live as they come and send a short note afterwards on the garden's opening hours for anyone who wants to visit themselves.
It suits anyone who enjoys gardens and quiet green spaces, and anyone looking for a calmer session between busier historical walks.

Itinerary
-
Welcome and sound check 5 min
The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Dublin before heading out.
-
The sunken lawn and rustic grotto 15 min
The camera takes in a sunken Victorian lawn and a rockwork grotto, and I explain how this garden stayed largely unknown to visitors despite sitting minutes from Grafton Street.
-
The maze and archery grounds 15 min
You see the garden's hedge maze and former archery grounds, and I point out design features that trace back to its origins as a private exhibition garden in the 1860s.
-
Your questions 7 min
Time to ask anything about Dublin: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.
-
A short list to keep 3 min
Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Boxty and Georgian Quarter, worth a slower look.
Good to know

- The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
- Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
- Sessions run in small groups, up to 9 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
