Kayaköy, the abandoned village above Fethiye
Highlights
- Hundreds of stone houses left empty
- Abandoned after the 1923 population exchange
- A chapel with no roof left
- Paintwork fragments still on the walls
- A community that disappeared in a year
About this tour
This session walks through Kayaköy, a village of stone houses left empty on a hillside above Fethiye. You see the scale of the abandonment from a distance, then the camera moves closer to a roofless chapel and through the narrow lanes between the houses. Together the stops explain how a whole community disappeared from one place in a single year.
I start with a sound check at the edge of the village, then we move uphill stop by stop while you ask questions about the history. I pause at the chapel a little longer, since the paintwork fragments are easy to miss on camera. At the end I send a short written summary of the dates and events.
This suits anyone interested in the more difficult parts of the region's twentieth century history. It also suits a traveller who has seen the busy resorts nearby and wants a quieter, more serious contrast.

Itinerary
-
Welcome and sound check 6 min
The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Fethiye before heading out.
-
Kayaköy Hillside 17 min
The camera looks across hundreds of stone houses left standing empty on the hillside. I explain how the village was abandoned after the 1923 population exchange between Greece and Turkey.
-
Kayaköy Chapel 17 min
You see the shell of a small chapel near the top of the village, its roof long gone. I point out fragments of paintwork still visible on the inside walls.
-
Village Lanes 17 min
We move through the narrow lanes between the houses, most missing their roofs and doors. I explain how the stone walls have survived decades without upkeep.
-
Your questions 11 min
Time to ask anything about Fethiye: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.
-
A short list to keep 5 min
Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Grilled sea bass and Çalış, worth a slower look.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
