Giotto's tower, finished by others
Highlights
- A tower with two design phases
- Marble panels from Giotto's own plan
- A vision changed after the architect's death
- Style shifting as the tower rises
- History read level by level
About this tour
This session traces Giotto's Campanile from base to top, since the design changed significantly partway through construction. You see the original coloured marble panels near ground level, and the shift in style higher up the tower. The camera moves upward in stages to show the change clearly.
We spend time comparing the lower and upper sections directly, since the change is easy to miss without pointing it out. I explain why Giotto's original design was altered after his death, and take questions as we move up the tower.
It suits anyone interested in how a single building can carry more than one architect's vision. It also pairs well with the dome session nearby.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
