Two towers, two centuries apart
Highlights
- Two towers, two different solutions
- Decades apart, standing side by side
- A dome and a tower, compared directly
- Very different approaches to building tall
- An unusual pairing kept in one square
About this tour
This session compares Giotto's Campanile with Brunelleschi's dome directly, two very different solutions built only decades apart. You see the tower from the square, the dome alongside it for comparison, and both together from a short distance away. The camera treats them as a matched pair throughout.
We move between the two structures rather than treating either in isolation, since the comparison is the real subject here. I explain the different engineering approaches each required, and take questions as we go.
It suits anyone interested in architectural history and how styles changed within a single generation. It also works well after either the dome or Campanile session individually.
Included

Itinerary
-
Welcome and sound check 6 min
The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Florence before heading out.
-
Campanile view 17 min
The camera frames the Campanile from across the square, and I explain roughly how long it took to finish once construction properly resumed.
-
Dome comparison 17 min
Turning to the dome nearby, I compare the two structures directly, since they represent very different approaches to building tall.
-
Distant skyline pairing 17 min
From a short distance away, both the tower and the dome appear together in one frame, and I explain how unusual it is for a city to keep two such different landmarks side by side.
-
Your questions 11 min
Time to ask anything about Florence: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.
-
A short list to keep 5 min
Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Lampredotto and Oltrarno, worth a slower look.
Good to know
- A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
- Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
- Times are shown in Rome time, so check the time where you are before you book.
- The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
- Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
- Sessions run in small groups, up to 8 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
