About this tour

This session moves from the waterfront fort of São Brás to the parish church of São Sebastião in the main square. You see nearly five centuries of defensive architecture and a carved doorway that has outlasted several rebuilds behind it. Marta ties both buildings back to the city's earliest years.

The walk starts at the fort, moves along the harbour it once defended, and finishes at the church, with Marta keeping the pace steady and the explanations in sequence. She answers questions about the city's early history as they come up.

This suits anyone who enjoyed the shorter Portas da Cidade session and wants the fuller history behind it. It also works well as a standalone introduction to Ponta Delgada's old centre.

Included

  • Live video walk with a local guide
  • Questions to your guide all the way
  • A short list of places to visit later

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 6 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Ponta Delgada before heading out.

  2. Forte de São Brás 17 min

The camera looks along the waterfront fort's walls, still an active military post after nearly five centuries, and I explain what the small museum inside holds without needing to step past the entrance.

  3. Harbour view from the fort 17 min

From beside the fort, the camera turns to the harbour it was built to defend, and I point out how the coastline has changed since ships first needed protecting here.

  4. Igreja Matriz de São Sebastião 17 min

Back in the main square, the camera settles on the parish church's Manueline doorway, and I explain how its carved stonework survived several rebuilds of the structure behind it.

  5. Your questions 11 min

Time to ask anything about Ponta Delgada: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  6. A short list to keep 5 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Ananás dos Açores and Marina, worth a slower look.

Good to know

  • A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
  • Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
  • Times are shown in Azores time, so check the time where you are before you book.
  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
  • Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 8 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
