The Städel's seven centuries of painting, from outside
Highlights
- Seven centuries of European painting
- Paintings described in colour and detail
- A museum collection built over a century
- Art history from a riverside terrace
- Depth over a long list of names
About this tour
This session describes highlights from the Städel's collection, spanning seven centuries of European painting, from outside the museum on its riverside terrace. You hear specific works described in colour and composition, and see the setting that has grown the collection over more than a century. It stays close to the entrance throughout.
We settle facing the museum and I describe two or three paintings slowly, since depth matters more than a long list here. Questions come naturally between each one. A short reading list on the collection follows by message.
It suits anyone curious about European art history who wants context without a ticket. It also pairs well with the Museumsufer session for a wider view of the riverside museums.

Itinerary
-
Welcome and sound check 5 min
The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Frankfurt before heading out.
-
Städel entrance 15 min
The camera holds on the museum's riverside facade, and I describe two or three paintings from its collection in detail, since filming inside the galleries is not permitted.
-
Riverside terrace 15 min
From the terrace outside, you see the Main flowing past, and I explain how the museum's collection grew to span seven centuries of European painting.
-
Your questions 7 min
Time to ask anything about Frankfurt: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.
-
A short list to keep 3 min
Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Rippchen mit Kraut (pork rib with sauerkraut) and Altstadt, worth a slower look.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
