Furnas, a stew cooked by the volcano
Highlights
- Ground that steams from volcanic heat
- Pots lowered into marked pits
- A stew cooked without a fire
- Furnas, explained through its geology
- Where heat and food meet
About this tour
This session shows the fumarole field at Furnas, where volcanic heat rising through the ground is used to cook cozido, a meat and vegetable stew, slowly underground. You see the steaming valley itself and the marked pits where pots are lowered each morning. Pedro explains the geology behind the heat before he explains the food.
The walk moves from the open steaming ground to the row of covered pits, timed for whenever pots are being placed or checked that day. Pedro answers questions about both the volcano and the dish as they come up.
This suits anyone curious about volcanic landscapes as much as food traditions. It also works well paired with Pedro's market session for the fuller Furnas to Ponta Delgada picture.

Itinerary
-
Welcome and sound check 5 min
The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Ponta Delgada before heading out.
-
Steaming ground 21 min
The camera looks over ground that steams constantly from volcanic heat below, and I explain why this particular valley is hot enough to cook a meal without a fire.
-
Cozido pits 21 min
Pots are lowered into marked holes here each morning and left to cook slowly underground for hours. I point out today's pots and explain what usually goes into a cozido das Furnas.
-
Your questions 9 min
Time to ask anything about Ponta Delgada: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.
-
A short list to keep 4 min
Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Bolo lêvedo and Furnas, worth a slower look.

- The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
- Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
- Sessions run in small groups, up to 10 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
