Gelati Monastery, King David's academy

- A UNESCO monastery near Kutaisi

About this tour
This session covers Gelati Monastery, founded in the twelfth century by King David the Builder as both a church and an academy. You see the main cathedral's surviving mosaics, then the ruins of the academy itself, and finally the gate where the king is said to be buried. It traces the site from worship to scholarship to burial in one visit.
We move through the monastery room by room, giving the mosaics time to read properly on camera, then step out to the academy ruins. I keep the history in order as we go, and there is time for questions once we reach the grave.
It suits anyone interested in medieval Georgian history and learning, and it pairs naturally with a Motsameta session nearby.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
