About this tour
This session moves through Saint Bavo's Cathedral from its mixed Romanesque and Gothic front to the chapel holding the Ghent Altarpiece and finally the crypt. You see the building's exterior first, then hear a detailed description of the Van Eyck panels from the chapel doorway, before finishing among the oldest surviving stonework in the crypt. It traces one building across five centuries of construction.
We start with a sound check outside, since the square can be busy with visitors. I describe the altarpiece carefully from where filming is allowed, then move to the crypt for the final stop and your questions. A short reading list on the painting and the cathedral follows by message afterwards.
It suits anyone with an interest in Flemish painting or medieval architecture. It also works well before visiting the cathedral yourself, as background for what is inside.
Included
- Live video walk with a local guide

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
