Granada Cathedral, a Renaissance giant on a mosque's footprint
Highlights
- Built on a demolished mosque
- Gothic plans, Renaissance finish
- A shift visible in the columns
- A domed royal chapel
- Sixteenth-century royal funding
About this tour
This session covers Granada Cathedral from its Renaissance facade to the domed main chapel, tracing a building that replaced the city's main mosque and shifted from Gothic to Renaissance design partway through its own construction. You see exactly where that architectural change shows in the columns. The three stops move through the building in the order most visitors experience it.
We begin outside at the facade with a short check of the light, then move inside through the nave to the main chapel, pausing to explain the architectural shift and the royal funding behind it. I answer questions throughout and send a short timeline afterward.
This suits anyone drawn to buildings that changed style mid-construction, and travellers who want the city's central church explained in full. It works well paired with a visit to the neighbouring Capilla Real.

Itinerary
-
Welcome and sound check 6 min
The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Granada before heading out.
-
The main facade 17 min
The camera settles on the cathedral's Renaissance facade, and I explain how it stands directly on the site of Granada's main mosque, demolished after the Christian conquest of the city.
-
The nave 17 min
You see the vast interior nave, where Gothic plans gave way to Renaissance design partway through construction, and I point out where that architectural shift is visible in the columns.
-
The main chapel 17 min
We finish at the domed main chapel, and I explain the royal patronage that funded much of the building across the 16th century.
-
Your questions 11 min
Time to ask anything about Granada: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.
-
A short list to keep 5 min
Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Tapas served free with drinks and Albaicín, worth a slower look.

- Sessions run in small groups, up to 10 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
