About this tour

This session follows the route up the mountain above Hallstatt, from the funicular's valley station to the viewing platform at the top. You see the thirteenth-century tower turned into a terrace, then the skywalk platform looking straight down over the rooftops and lake. It stays on the mountainside path and terraces rather than going into the mine itself.

I worked underground here for years before I started guiding, so I answer questions about the mining side in real depth as we climb. The pace is steady since the views change quickly between each stop.

This suits anyone who wants mining history from someone who actually did the work rather than read about it. It also suits anyone who wants the best view over the village explained stop by stop.

Included

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 7 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Hallstatt before heading out.

  2. Funicular Valley Station 21 min

You see the base of the funicular that has carried workers and visitors up to the mine for more than a century, and I explain how the same route once carried salt down by a different method entirely.

  3. Rudolfsturm Terrace 21 min

From the terrace beside a defensive tower built in the thirteenth century, the whole lake opens up below us, and I point out where the oldest mining shafts run under the mountain.

  4. World Heritage Skywalk 21 min

The camera looks straight down from the viewing platform over the rooftops and the lake, and I describe what mining underground actually felt like compared with this view from above it.

  5. Your questions 14 min

Time to ask anything about Hallstatt: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  6. A short list to keep 6 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Salzkammergut Kasnocken (cheese noodles with fried onion) and Salzberg, worth a slower look.

Good to know

  • A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
  • Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
  • Times are shown in Vienna time, so check the time where you are before you book.
  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
  • Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 8 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
