About this tour

This session follows a breakfast morning in Çengelköy on the Asian shore, from a table set with kaymak, menemen and simit to a walk past Kuleli military school and the old wooden mansions along the water. It ends on the ferry back across the Bosphorus. It is a slower, residential side of Istanbul away from the main sights.

The guide starts with a sound check, then moves from the table to the shore and onto the ferry, taking questions the whole way rather than waiting until the end. A short list of what was covered is sent once the call finishes.

This suits anyone interested in Turkish food or a quieter side of the Bosphorus. It also suits anyone who has visited the old city already and wants to see somewhere different.

Included

  • Live video session with a local guide
  • A close look at the dishes and where locals buy them
  • A short list of places and dishes to try later

Not included

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 7 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Istanbul before heading out.

  2. A Çengelköy breakfast table 21 min

At a breakfast table by the water in Çengelköy, the camera moves across plates of kaymak with honey, menemen and fresh simit, and the guide explains what makes a proper Turkish breakfast spread.

  3. Along the Asian shore 21 min

Walking along the shore past Kuleli military school, the camera takes in the old wooden Bosphorus mansions lining the water, and the guide explains why this stretch stayed so quiet compared with the European side.

  4. Ferry back across the Bosphorus 21 min

On the ferry heading back, the camera looks out at the bridges crossing the strait, and the guide points out which ones link Europe and Asia and how the skyline changes at this hour.

  5. Your questions 14 min

Time to ask anything about Istanbul: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  6. A short list to keep 6 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Kebab and Kadıköy, worth a slower look.

Good to know

  • A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
  • Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
  • Times are shown in Istanbul time, so check the time where you are before you book.
  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
  • Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 10 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
