Pažaislis Monastery, on the water
Highlights
- Baroque cupolas above the reservoir
- Italian stucco in a Lithuanian courtyard
- A painted dome inside the church
- A monastery repurposed under Soviet rule
- Southern architecture on a northern lake
About this tour
This session covers Pažaislis Monastery from the reservoir shore, through its courtyard and into the painted church interior. You see the Baroque cupolas against the water, the Italian stucco work in the courtyard, and the painted dome inside. It is a rare piece of southern European architecture in a Lithuanian setting.
I start with a sound check on the shore path, then move through the gate into the courtyard before finishing inside the church. I take questions at each stop, and I send a short note afterwards on the complex's history under different regimes.
This suits anyone interested in Baroque architecture or the history of religious buildings under Soviet rule. It also works well paired with the reservoir walk for a fuller afternoon by the water.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
