About this tour

This session walks the Gap of Dunloe at a slow, steady pace, from the cottage that marks its start to a viewpoint over the upper lakes at its far end. You see the mountains closing in on either side of the road and hear how the pass was shaped and used long before it became a route for visitors. It stays outdoors throughout with plenty of time to take in the scale of the place.

We begin with a short sound check at the cottage, then walk the pass stop by stop, pausing wherever the view or the geology is worth explaining properly. I answer questions as we go and send a short note afterwards on the wider valley for anyone who wants to explore further.

It suits anyone who wants real time with mountain scenery, and anyone curious about how this route was used before it became known to visitors.

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 7 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Killarney before heading out.

  2. Kate Kearney's Cottage 21 min

The camera stops at the old cottage marking the start of the pass, and I explain how it grew from a private house into a well known stop for travellers heading into the Gap.

  3. The narrowest point of the pass 21 min

You see the road narrow between the MacGillycuddy's Reeks and Purple Mountain, and I point out the glacial features that shaped this route thousands of years ago.

  4. The upper lakes viewpoint 21 min

The walk finishes at a high point looking down over the upper lakes, and I explain how this route once carried herders and traders between the valleys.

  5. Your questions 14 min

Time to ask anything about Killarney: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  6. A short list to keep 6 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Killarney lake trout and Muckross, worth a slower look.

  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 8 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
