Highlights

  • The last stronghold to fall in the 1650s
  • A tower house on Lough Leane's shore
  • Boats departing for Innisfallen Island
  • Knockreer's old demesne woodland
  • A relaxed walk along the lakeshore

About this tour

This session follows the shore of Killarney's largest lake from a 15th-century tower house to the woodland edge of the old demesne beside it. You see the castle from the water and the departure point still used for boats to Innisfallen Island. It moves at a relaxed pace along flat lakeside paths.

We open with a sound check by the castle, then follow the shore stop by stop with time to look at the water before I explain the history at each point. I take questions live and send a short note afterwards on the boat trips to the island for anyone who wants to go further.

It suits anyone interested in military and estate history, and anyone who wants a proper look at the lake before exploring it themselves.

Included

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 6 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Killarney before heading out.

  2. Ross Castle exterior 17 min

The camera takes in the 15th-century tower house from the lake path, and I explain how it held out as the last Irish stronghold to fall in the Cromwellian wars.

  3. The lakeshore path 17 min

You see the shore of Lough Leane from below the castle, and I point out the boats that still depart here for Innisfallen Island.

  4. Knockreer woodland edge 17 min

The walk finishes at the edge of Knockreer's woodland, and I explain how this side of the demesne was laid out as parkland for the estate that once owned the castle grounds.

  5. Your questions 11 min

Time to ask anything about Killarney: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  6. A short list to keep 5 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Brown soda bread and Muckross, worth a slower look.

Good to know

  • A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
  • Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
  • Times are shown in Dublin time, so check the time where you are before you book.
  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
  • Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 9 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
