Highlights

  • Slovakia's largest cathedral, seen up close
  • A prince's crypt beneath the west front
  • A bastion that once held the town's executioner
  • Medieval walls still standing in the old town
  • Two very different sides of one old town

About this tour

This session covers Dóm svätej Alžbety, the largest cathedral in Slovakia, and Katova bašta, a surviving bastion of the medieval town walls. You see the cathedral's carved west front, hear about the exiled prince buried in its crypt and then move to the bastion that once housed the town's executioner. It is a close look at two very different sides of medieval Košice.

I start at the cathedral and work outward toward the old walls, keeping a steady pace between the two. Questions come in throughout, especially about the prince's story, and I answer them as we go rather than saving them for the end. A short list of names and dates follows once we finish.

This suits anyone with a serious interest in Central European history rather than a quick highlights pass. It also works well as a first session for visitors new to Košice.

Included

  • Live video walk with a local guide

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 7 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Košice before heading out.

  2. Dóm sv. Alžbety Facade 21 min

You see the west front of Slovakia's largest cathedral, and I point out the carved details still original from the medieval build.

  3. Cathedral Crypt Entrance 21 min

From the doorway, I explain how a Hungarian prince who led a failed 18th-century uprising is buried in the crypt below.

  4. Katova bašta 21 min

At the surviving town-wall bastion, I describe how it once housed the town's executioner, one of the last such buildings standing in Slovakia.

  5. Your questions 14 min

Time to ask anything about Košice: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  6. A short list to keep 6 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Bryndzové halušky and Staré Mesto, worth a slower look.

Good to know

  • A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
  • Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
  • Times are shown in Bratislava time, so check the time where you are before you book.
  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
  • Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 10 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
