About this tour
This session focuses on St Mary's Basilica's wooden altarpiece, one of the largest Gothic altarpieces in Europe. You see the whole structure from as close as filming allows, then a single carved panel in detail. It is a close look at a piece of craftsmanship most visitors only glimpse from a distance.
We start with a short sound check facing the altar, then hold on specific panels for longer than a quick visit would allow. I explain the carving technique and the workshop behind it as we go, taking questions throughout.
It suits anyone with an interest in Gothic art or woodcarving specifically. It also pairs well with the trumpet call session for the fuller story of the basilica.

The camera opens facing the basilica's high altar from as close as filming allows, and I explain the scale of the wooden altarpiece carved in the fifteenth century.

We hold on one carved panel specifically, and I point out the level of detail in the figures, carved from limewood by a workshop led by Veit Stoss.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
