Lagoa do Fogo, the island's hidden crater
Highlights
- A crater lake with no road to it
- São Miguel's least visited reserve
- Steep slopes ringing a hidden lake
- Older, worn craters along the ridge
- The wildest of the island's lakes
About this tour
This session climbs into the protected reserve around Lagoa do Fogo, one of São Miguel's least accessible crater lakes. You see the lake from above, ringed by steep slopes with no road down to the water. Ana explains why this reserve is managed more strictly than the island's other lakes.
The walk moves from the reserve entrance to the main viewpoint and along a short stretch of ridge, with Ana checking in on the weather throughout, since this is the cloudiest of the island's viewpoints. Questions about the reserve's rules and wildlife come up naturally along the way.
This suits viewers who prefer a quieter, wilder lake to a well-visited one. It pairs naturally with Ana's Sete Cidades session for a fuller comparison of the island's craters.
Included
- Live video walk with a local guide

Itinerary
-
Welcome and sound check 6 min
The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Ponta Delgada before heading out.
-
Reserve entrance 17 min
The road climbs into cloud forest before opening onto the protected reserve around Lagoa do Fogo, and I explain why access here is more limited than at the island's other crater lakes.
-
Lake viewpoint 17 min
From the main viewpoint, the camera looks down at the lake sitting inside its own smaller crater, ringed by steep green slopes with no road reaching the shore itself.
-
Ridge path 17 min
A short stretch along the ridge shows the wider island beyond the reserve, and I point out how many of São Miguel's hills are simply older, more worn craters.
-
Your questions 11 min
Time to ask anything about Ponta Delgada: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.
-
A short list to keep 5 min
Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Lapas grelhadas and Marina, worth a slower look.

- Sessions run in small groups, up to 8 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
