About this tour

This session follows a Lagos cataplana from the market to the pan, starting with clams, prawns and monkfish bought fresh that morning. The guide, who ran a restaurant on Rua da Barroca for thirty years, prepares a tomato salad and olives before sealing the seafood into a copper cataplana. It is a working kitchen session built around one dish rather than a tasting menu.

The call opens with a sound check, then follows the four stops from market stall to stovetop, with the guide explaining each step while the pan cooks. Questions come in throughout, and a short list of the recipe's steps is sent once the call ends.

This suits anyone who wants to see a classic Algarve dish made properly before trying it themselves, or anyone who simply enjoys watching a kitchen at work. It also suits anyone missing a good, slow Sunday lunch.

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 10 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Lagos before heading out.

  2. Lagos market 21 min

The camera follows a basket filling with clams, prawns and monkfish at the Lagos market, and the guide explains what makes a good cataplana start with the right mix of shellfish and fish.

  3. Tomato salad and olives 21 min

Back at the kitchen counter, the guide slices tomatoes and sets out a bowl of Algarve olives, explaining how a simple starter is meant to prepare the table rather than compete with the main dish.

  4. Cataplana in the copper pan 21 min

The camera watches the copper cataplana pan close over the seafood as it steams, and the guide explains why the hinged lid seals in the broth in a way an open pot cannot.

  5. Thirty years on Rua da Barroca 21 min

While the pan cooks, the guide talks about running a restaurant on Rua da Barroca for thirty years, and explains how the same recipe has stayed on the menu the whole time, finishing with a fig and almond cake set out on the table.

  6. Your questions 18 min

Time to ask anything about Lagos: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  7. A short list to keep 8 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Cataplana (seafood stew) and Meia Praia, worth a slower look.

  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.

  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 8 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
