About this tour

This session moves through the Bach Museum, from a room of original manuscript pages to a collection of period instruments. You see handwriting details scholars still use to date individual compositions. The session finishes at the instrument case, comparing period sound to what a modern concert hall usually offers.

We open with a short sound check inside the first room. I move slowly between the two displays, since the detail rewards a closer look, and take questions on the manuscripts and instruments throughout. Afterwards I send a short note on what we saw with a few further reading suggestions.

This suits anyone with a specific interest in Bach's working methods rather than only his music. It also works well as a shorter add-on to the Thomaskirche session.

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 5 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Leipzig before heading out.

  2. The manuscript room 15 min

The camera moves close on a display of original manuscript pages, and I point out the handwriting details that scholars still use to date Bach's compositions.

  3. The instrument collection 15 min

We stop at a case of period instruments, and I explain how their sound differs from the modern versions used in most concerts today.

  4. Your questions 7 min

Time to ask anything about Leipzig: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  5. A short list to keep 3 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Bratkartoffeln (fried potatoes) and Innenstadt, worth a slower look.

Good to know

  • A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.

  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
  • Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 7 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.
