About this tour

This session looks at Leuven's art history through Sint-Pieterskerk and the M Leuven museum. You see the unfinished church towers and hear the story of Dirk Bouts' altarpiece inside, then move to the museum building that now holds much of the city's collection. It traces one thread of Flemish painting through two sites.

We check the light outside the church first, since the interior shot depends on the doorway view. I describe the triptych carefully from where we can film, then we walk on to the museum for the final stop, leaving time for questions throughout. A short reading list on Dirk Bouts follows afterwards.

It suits anyone with an interest in Flemish painting or church architecture. It also works well before a museum visit of your own, as background for what is inside.

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 6 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Leuven before heading out.

  2. Sint-Pieterskerk exterior 17 min

We stand at the church steps while the camera takes in the Gothic facade, and I explain why the planned twin towers were never finished.

  3. Sint-Pieterskerk interior view 17 min

From just inside the doorway you see the high altar, and I describe Dirk Bouts' Last Supper triptych in detail since filming it up close is not permitted.

  4. M Leuven exterior 17 min

We finish outside the museum building, a converted mansion, and I point out how the modern glass wing was added to the older stone front.

  5. Your questions 11 min

Time to ask anything about Leuven: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  6. A short list to keep 5 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Speculoos biscuits and Oude Markt, worth a slower look.

Good to know

  • A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
  • Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
  • Times are shown in Brussels time, so check the time where you are before you book.
  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
  • Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 8 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
