Amathus, an ancient kingdom on a hillside
Highlights
- An independent ancient city-kingdom
- Ruins far quieter than the famous sites
- A marketplace, imagined properly
- Centuries before Roman rule arrived
- An excavator's own detailed care
About this tour
This session walks the hillside ruins of Amathus, one of Cyprus's ancient independent city-kingdoms, far less visited than sites like Kourion. You see the layout of a settlement that governed itself for centuries before Roman rule, explained by someone who worked a season on its excavation. It stays along the public paths of the site throughout.
I walk the hillside carefully, explaining the site's independent history before describing what the old marketplace area would have looked like in use. Questions get detailed answers, since the site rarely gets this level of attention.
This suits anyone who prefers a quieter ancient site to a crowded one. It also works well paired with a Kourion visit for a fuller sense of ancient Cyprus.
Included
- Live video walk with a local guide

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
