Linzer Torte, the world's oldest named cake
Highlights
- A cake called the world's oldest named dessert
- A lattice pattern with centuries of history
- A handwritten recipe kept behind the counter
- Locals still arguing over the correct filling
- A dessert most visitors never ask about
About this tour
This session stays inside a bakery still working from a family recipe for Linzer Torte, widely considered the world's oldest named cake. You see the lattice pattern cut across the top and then a handwritten recipe kept behind the counter, older than most printed accounts of the cake. It is a close look at a dessert most visitors only eat without ever asking where it came from.
I stay close to the counter throughout, asking the baker questions on your behalf about the recipe's history and the correct filling. Viewers can send their own questions too, and I put them straight to the baker where it helps. A short note on where else to try it follows once we finish.
This suits anyone with a genuine interest in food history rather than just a sweet tooth. It also works well as a short add-on to a longer old town session.
Included

- A short list of places and dishes to try later

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
