Chiado's cafes and bookshops, a slow walk
Highlights
- A cafe tied to Lisbon's writers
- An old bookshop's facade, explained
- Streets built for lingering, not rushing
- Literary Lisbon, traced on foot
- Chiado's mix of old and new
About this tour
This session walks Chiado, the neighbourhood long associated with Lisbon's writers and their cafes. You see a historic cafe's exterior and then an old bookshop nearby, tracing the streets where literary Lisbon gathered without stepping inside any working business. It is a slow walk suited to a neighbourhood built for lingering rather than rushing through.
We check the connection outside the cafe, then move to the bookshop for the second stop, pausing for your questions about the writers connected to each spot. I send a short list of names once the session ends.
It suits anyone with an interest in literary history and unhurried city walks, and travellers who enjoy Chiado's mix of old and new shopfronts. This session films exteriors and streets rather than the inside of any shop or cafe.

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Lisbon before heading out.
-
A. Brasileira cafe 21 min
The camera pauses outside a historic cafe long associated with Lisbon's writers, and I explain why this particular corner of Chiado attracted them.
-
An old bookshop 21 min
We move to one of Chiado's older bookshops, and I point out the building's facade rather than filming inside the working shop itself.
-
Your questions 9 min
Time to ask anything about Lisbon: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.
-
A short list to keep 4 min
Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Bacalhau (salt cod) and Bairro Alto, worth a slower look.
Good to know
- A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
- Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
- Times are shown in Lisbon time, so check the time where you are before you book.
- The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
- Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
- Sessions run in small groups, up to 10 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
