The British Museum's forecourt and Great Court roof
Highlights
- A facade built like a Greek temple
- A modern glass roof over an old courtyard
- A free museum's funding explained
- Architecture as much as artefacts
- Orientation before a longer visit
About this tour
This session covers the British Museum's public spaces, the colonnaded forecourt and the covered Great Court, both free to enter without a ticket. It covers the building's classical design and the modern glass roof added to the central courtyard. It is an architecture-focused session rather than an object-by-object gallery tour.
We start outside with the facade's classical references, then move into the Great Court for the roof itself. Questions about how the museum is funded and run come up more often than questions about specific objects, and I answer in as much detail as I can. I close with a note on which galleries tend to be quietest.
It suits architecture enthusiasts and anyone curious about how a major free museum actually operates. It also suits first-time visitors wanting orientation before exploring the collections themselves.

Itinerary
-
Welcome and sound check 5 min
The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of London before heading out.
-
Forecourt approach 21 min
The camera holds on the museum's colonnaded facade, and I explain how the building was designed to resemble a classical Greek temple, deliberately linking the collection to its own subject matter.
-
Great Court roof 21 min
Inside the covered courtyard, you see the glass and steel roof added in 2000, and I explain how its irregular, almost cellular pattern was engineered to fit an oddly shaped space.
-
Your questions 9 min
Time to ask anything about London: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.
-
A short list to keep 4 min
Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Pie and mash and Notting Hill, worth a slower look.
Good to know
- A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
- Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
- Times are shown in London time, so check the time where you are before you book.
- The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
- Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
- Sessions run in small groups, up to 9 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
