About this tour

This walk covers two of South London's most mixed food streets, from Brixton Market and Electric Avenue to the chop bars and grills of Rye Lane in Peckham. You see Caribbean stalls and record shops in Brixton, jollof rice and kelewele being prepared in a Ghanaian kitchen, and suya grilled over coals nearby. It ends on the roof of a Peckham car park, looking back over both neighbourhoods towards the centre of London.

The call begins with a sound check, then moves market to market and street to street at an unhurried pace, with the guide talking to stallholders along the way. Questions are welcome throughout, and a short list of the stalls and dishes mentioned is sent afterwards.

This suits anyone interested in London's Caribbean and West African communities and the food that came with them. It also suits those who know Brixton or Peckham by name only and want to see the streets themselves.

Included

  • Live video session with a local guide
  • A close look at the dishes and where locals buy them
  • A short list of places and dishes to try later

Not included

  • Food and drinks shown on camera
  • Travel to the city

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 10 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of London before heading out.

  2. Brixton Market 21 min

In Brixton Market, the camera moves past stalls selling Caribbean produce and record shops that have traded here for decades, the guide pointing out where a Jamaican patty and a slice of bun and cheese are made.

  3. Electric Avenue 21 min

Along Electric Avenue, the guide walks under the old iron arcades, once among the first London streets lit by electricity, now lined with fabric shops and stalls.

  4. A Peckham chop bar 21 min

In a Ghanaian chop bar on Rye Lane, the guide watches jollof rice and kelewele being prepared, then stops nearby where Nigerian suya is grilled over open coals.

  5. A Peckham car park roof 21 min

From the roof of a Peckham multi-storey car park, the camera takes in the view back over the rooftops towards central London as the guide points out the skyline.

  6. Your questions 18 min

Time to ask anything about London: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  7. A short list to keep 8 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Afternoon tea and Soho, worth a slower look.

Good to know

  • Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
  • Times are shown in London time, so check the time where you are before you book.
  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.

  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 10 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
