About this tour

This walk follows Greenwich from the river to the hilltop, from the Cutty Sark on the quay to the Royal Observatory in Greenwich Park. You see the Old Royal Naval College's courtyard, the old arcade of Greenwich Market, and the Prime Meridian line marked out in the Observatory's courtyard. It climbs from maritime history at the water's edge to the line that divides the world's east from its west.

The session opens with a sound check, then follows the route uphill from the river towards the park, stopping at each building along the way. Questions come as the walk goes, and a short list of the sights and their history is sent afterwards.

This suits anyone interested in Britain's maritime history and the science that grew out of it. It also suits those who want to stand, even briefly and by video, on the line that sets the world's time.

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 7 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of London before heading out.

  2. The Cutty Sark 21 min

From the quay, the camera looks along the hull of the Cutty Sark, the tea clipper preserved in dry dock at Greenwich, the guide explaining what made a ship like this fast.

  3. The Old Royal Naval College courtyard 21 min

At the Old Royal Naval College, the guide walks the courtyard between the two domed buildings, describing the Painted Hall inside without being able to take the camera through the door.

  4. The Royal Observatory and the Meridian 21 min

Up in Greenwich Park, the walk ends at the Royal Observatory, where the guide stands on the Prime Meridian line marked in the courtyard, one hemisphere of the world on each side.

  5. Your questions 14 min

Time to ask anything about London: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  6. A short list to keep 6 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Sunday roast and Soho, worth a slower look.

Good to know

  • A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
  • Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
  • Times are shown in London time, so check the time where you are before you book.
  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
  • Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 12 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
