Hackney's canal towpath by day
Highlights
- A canal built for freight, not leisure
- Houseboats adapted by their residents
- A calm daytime canal walk
- Industrial history still floating today
- A quieter side of a lively area
About this tour
This session follows the Regent's Canal towpath through Hackney by day, from its entrance down from street level to a stretch lined with houseboats. It covers the canal's original industrial purpose and how residents have adapted their moored boats over time. It is a calmer daytime counterpart to the evening Dalston session.
We start at the towpath entrance with the canal's history, then walk the water's edge at an easy pace. Questions about the houseboats and their residents come up naturally, and I answer from years of walking this exact stretch myself. I close with a note on the quietest times of day to walk it.
It suits anyone who wants a calmer, greener session away from the area's nightlife. It also pairs well with the evening bars session for a fuller sense of the neighbourhood.

The camera holds on the entrance down to the Regent's Canal towpath, and I explain how the waterway was built originally for freight rather than the leisure use it sees today.

Further along, you see a row of moored houseboats, and I point out the small gardens and solar panels some residents have added to their decks.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
