About this tour

This session walks the Thames towpath into Richmond, ending at the oldest surviving bridge across the river in London. It covers the area's history as a retreat for wealthy Londoners and the bridge's long working life since the 1770s. It is a shorter, gentler riverside walk compared to the park sessions nearby.

We start along the towpath with the area's history, then walk towards the bridge as the light changes in the late afternoon. Questions about the river and the area's history come up steadily, and I answer from a decade spent volunteering and walking in the area. I close with a note on the best light for photographing the bridge.

It suits anyone who wants a gentle riverside walk with genuine history attached. It also pairs well with the deer session earlier in the day for a fuller visit to the area.

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 5 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of London before heading out.

  2. Towpath riverside 15 min

The camera follows the Thames towpath, and I explain how this stretch of the river was a fashionable retreat for wealthy Londoners escaping the city long before it became a commuter suburb.

  3. Richmond Bridge 15 min

Arriving at the bridge, I explain how it is the oldest surviving Thames bridge in London, built in the 1770s and still carrying traffic today.

  4. Your questions 7 min

Time to ask anything about London: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  5. A short list to keep 3 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Full English breakfast and Shoreditch, worth a slower look.

  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
  • Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 10 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking".
