About this tour

This walk follows the South Bank from the Hayward Gallery to Tate Modern, taking in the Globe theatre from the riverside along the way. You see the raw concrete of the Hayward and the skateboarders below the Queen Elizabeth Hall, then the old power station chimney and Turbine Hall entrance at Tate Modern, explained by someone who used to work there. It follows the river rather than any single building.

The call opens with a sound check, then follows the riverside path east towards Bankside, stopping at each building the guide wants to point out. Questions come along the way, and a short list of the galleries and theatres mentioned is sent afterwards.

This suits anyone interested in twentieth-century architecture and art as much as the river itself. It also suits those who have visited Tate Modern before and want the context around the building as well.

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 7 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of London before heading out.

  2. The South Bank 21 min

Along the South Bank, the camera passes the Hayward Gallery's raw concrete and the skateboarders using the undercroft below the Queen Elizabeth Hall, one of the oldest skate spots in the country.

  3. The Globe from the riverside 21 min

From the riverside, the camera looks across at the Globe theatre, the guide explaining what the building is built to recreate before the walk carries on towards Bankside.

  4. Tate Modern's Turbine Hall entrance 21 min

The walk ends at Tate Modern, the camera taking in the old power station's chimney and the Turbine Hall from the entrance, with a former member of staff explaining what usually fills the space.

  5. Your questions 14 min

Time to ask anything about London: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  6. A short list to keep 6 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Fish and chips and Notting Hill, worth a slower look.

Good to know

  • A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
  • Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
  • Times are shown in London time, so check the time where you are before you book.
  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
  • Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 12 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
