About this tour

This walk follows old pubs from Borough to Bermondsey, starting at The George, the last galleried coaching inn left in the city. You hear about a pub linked to Dickens and his father's time in a debtors' prison nearby, then move along the Bermondsey Beer Mile's railway arch taprooms. It traces London's drinking history from coaching inns to the current wave of small breweries.

The call opens with a sound check, then moves pub to pub and arch to arch at an easy pace, with time to talk to whoever is behind the bar. Questions come along the way, and a short list of the pubs and breweries follows by message afterwards.

This suits anyone interested in pub history as much as the beer itself. It also suits those who know Borough Market but have never walked the streets and arches just beyond it.

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 7 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of London before heading out.

  2. The George 21 min

At The George, the camera holds on the galleried timber balconies, the last coaching inn of its kind left in London, the guide explaining how these yards once worked before the railways came.

  3. A pub linked to Dickens 21 min

The guide stops at a pub where Dickens is said to have drunk, not far from where his father was once held for debt, and talks through what that part of his life was like.

  4. The Bermondsey Beer Mile 21 min

Along the Bermondsey Beer Mile, the camera moves from one railway arch taproom to the next, the guide explaining what makes a real ale different from the beers most people know.

  5. Your questions 14 min

Time to ask anything about London: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  6. A short list to keep 6 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Full English breakfast and Shoreditch, worth a slower look.

Good to know

  • Times are shown in London time, so check the time where you are before you book.
  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
  • Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 12 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

Questions about this tour

What will the session cover?

The guide walks through London, showing you London Eye and Camden Market live on camera, plus whatever else you would like to see.

What happens if my connection drops?

Rejoin with the same link within a few minutes and the guide will catch you up on anything you missed.

Can I ask the guide questions during the session, or is it a fixed script?

Anything, any time. Sessions leave room for your own questions throughout, not just at the end.

Is this suitable if I do not drink?

Yes. Say so when you book and the guide will focus on the atmosphere and venues rather than the drinks list.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
