A full circuit of Lucca's Renaissance walls
Highlights
- A full loop on top of the walls
- Eleven bastions, one still explained
- A siege the walls never actually faced
- Rooftops seen from above the town
- A rampart wide enough for carriages
About this tour
This session follows the full loop of Lucca's Renaissance walls, still intact and now used as a park rather than a fortification. You see one of the eleven bastions up close, the wide path itself, and a high point looking back over the old town's rooftops. The whole route stays on top of the walls throughout.
We move at a steady walking pace since the loop is long, pausing properly at the bastion and the high viewpoint rather than everywhere in between. I explain the walls' construction history as we go, and take questions on specific stretches.
It suits anyone who wants a proper sense of Lucca's shape and scale rather than just its main squares. It also works well as a first session before exploring the streets inside the walls.

Itinerary
-
Welcome and sound check 7 min
The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Lucca before heading out.
-
Baluardo San Paolino 21 min
The camera moves along the tree-lined path atop one of the wall's eleven bastions, and I explain how each one was designed to cover the section of wall beside it.
-
Wall path midpoint 21 min
Further round, you see the full width of the rampart path, wide enough that it has carried walkers, cyclists and even carriages over the centuries.
-
View back towards the centre 21 min
From a high point on the walls, the camera turns inward to show the old town's rooftops, and I explain why the walls were never actually put to the siege they were built for.
-
Your questions 14 min
Time to ask anything about Lucca: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.
-
A short list to keep 6 min
Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Tordelli lucchesi (stuffed pasta) and Centro storico, worth a slower look.
Good to know
- A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
- Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
- Times are shown in Rome time, so check the time where you are before you book.
- The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
- Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
- Sessions run in small groups, up to 10 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
