About this tour

This session walks Lucerne's old town across two covered bridges, from the painted panels of Chapel Bridge to the darker Dance of Death series on Spreuer Bridge. You see the Water Tower beside the first bridge and several towers along the medieval Musegg Wall. It closes with the story of a clock allowed to run a minute fast.

The guide checks sound on Chapel Bridge, then walks the old town's edge from tower to tower, explaining each one as it appears. Questions can come in about the bridges, the wall or the clock throughout the walk. A short list of the sites and their history follows afterwards.

This suits anyone planning to visit Lucerne who wants its two bridges and old walls explained together. It also suits former visitors who crossed the bridges without knowing what the paintings showed.

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 10 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Lucerne before heading out.

  2. Chapel Bridge 21 min

The camera crosses Chapel Bridge, a fourteenth-century covered wooden bridge with painted panels set into its roof trusses. The guide explains what the panels depict and how many survived a 1993 fire that damaged the bridge.

  3. The Water Tower 21 min

Beside the bridge the camera circles the octagonal Water Tower, once used as a prison and an archive. The guide explains what the tower's thick walls were originally built to protect.

  4. The Musegg Wall 21 min

Climbing to the Musegg Wall, the camera passes several of its nine medieval towers, some open to walk through for free. The guide explains the Zyt clock, which is allowed to ring a minute ahead of every other clock in the city.

  5. Spreuer Bridge 21 min

The camera crosses Spreuer Bridge, its own set of painted panels showing the Dance of Death rather than religious scenes. The guide explains why this bridge's paintings take a darker tone than the one at Chapel Bridge.

  6. Your questions 18 min

Time to ask anything about Lucerne: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  7. A short list to keep 8 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Rösti and Altstadt, worth a slower look.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
