Art inside old churches, a live hour in Maastricht
Highlights
- A medieval church turned working bookshop
- A museum's rocket-shaped modern dome
- Why Aldo Rossi chose that unusual shape
- Working artists' studios behind the old walls
- Old buildings given a genuine second life
About this tour
This session looks at how old and new sit together in Maastricht's art scene, from a medieval church turned bookshop to a museum topped with a rocket-shaped dome, finishing in a quarter of working artists' studios. You see a very unusual reuse of a historic building, a piece of bold modern architecture, and then the working side of the local art world. Each stop is a different way this city treats art and old buildings together.
We walk at an easy pace between the three stops, spending longest at the bookshop since the interior rewards a slower look. I take French questions as comfortably as English or Dutch ones.
It suits anyone interested in architecture as much as painting or sculpture. Viewers who enjoy seeing how old buildings get a second life tend to like this one most.

Boekhandel Dominicanen 17 min
You see the inside of a thirteenth-century Dominican church now fitted with a tall steel bookcase structure, and I explain how the fittings were designed to sit inside the old building without touching its walls.
-
Bonnefantenmuseum Exterior 17 min
The camera looks up at the museum's rocket-shaped dome, designed by the architect Aldo Rossi, and I explain why he chose that shape for a building about modern art.

Jekerkwartier Studios 17 min
We walk into the quiet Jeker quarter where small ateliers sit behind the old city walls, and I point out studio windows where you can often see work in progress.

A short list to keep 5 min
Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Limburgse vlaai and Jekerkwartier, worth a slower look.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
