About this tour

This session tells the story of how Maastricht grew, starting at its oldest surviving city gate, following the old defensive walls, and finishing in a riverside district built on a former factory site. You see thirteenth-century stonework at one end of the walk and contemporary architecture at the other. The contrast is the point of the whole session.

We move steadily from one end of the old walls to the other, and I leave the comparison between old and new for the final stop rather than mentioning it too early. Questions tend to pick up once we reach the modern district.

It suits anyone interested in how a small historic city keeps growing without losing its centre. Viewers who enjoy urban planning or architecture usually get the most from it.

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 7 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Maastricht before heading out.

  2. Helpoort 21 min

You see the oldest surviving city gate in the country up close, and I explain how it once controlled everyone entering the city from the south.

  3. Old City Ramparts 21 min

The camera follows a stretch of the old defensive wall now turned into a walking park, and I point out where a watchtower still stands among the trees.

  4. Céramique District 21 min

We finish on the riverside in a district built on a former ceramics factory site, and I compare its modern architecture directly with the medieval gate we started at.

  5. Your questions 14 min

Time to ask anything about Maastricht: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  6. A short list to keep 6 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Zoervleis and Céramique, worth a slower look.

Good to know

  • A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
  • Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
  • Times are shown in Amsterdam time, so check the time where you are before you book.
  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
  • Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 9 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
