La Latina's tapas crawl, bar by bar
Highlights
- A street stacked with tapas bars
- Eating standing at the counter
- Napkins on the floor, explained
- A bodega run by the same family
- A proper tapas round, bar by bar
About this tour
This session moves along Cava Baja and its side streets, the heart of La Latina's tapas scene, from a standing-room bar to a small family-run bodega. You see how a proper tapas round actually works, bar by bar, rather than one long sit-down meal. Each stop shows a different style of the same tradition.
We move at the pace a real crawl would take, pausing longer wherever the bar itself has a story worth hearing. I explain the unwritten etiquette as we go, since it trips up a lot of first-time visitors. Questions usually come from whatever is on the counter in front of us.
This suits anyone who wants to understand tapas culture properly rather than just seeing a menu. It also works well before your own evening out in the same neighbourhood.
Included
- Live video session with a local guide
- A close look at the dishes and where locals buy them
- A short list of places and dishes to try later

Itinerary
-
Welcome and sound check 7 min
The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Madrid before heading out.
-
Cava Baja 21 min
The street is lined with tapas bars stacked close together, busiest on weekend afternoons. I point out which ones specialise in fried food and which focus on cold plates instead.
-
A standing-room bar 21 min
You see a bar where everyone eats standing at the counter rather than sitting down, the traditional way to do a tapas round. I explain the unwritten rules, how to order, and how to tell if a place is good by the napkins on the floor.
-
A family-run bodega 21 min
The last stop is a small bodega that has stayed in the same family for generations. I ask the owner what has changed on the street around them and what has stayed exactly the same.
-
Your questions 14 min
Time to ask anything about Madrid: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.
-
A short list to keep 6 min
Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Cocido madrileño and Chueca, worth a slower look.
Good to know
- A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
- Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
- Times are shown in Madrid time, so check the time where you are before you book.
- The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
- Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
- Sessions run in small groups, up to 8 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.
Questions about this tour
What will the session cover?
The guide walks through Madrid, showing you Cava Baja and A standing-room bar live on camera, plus whatever else you would like to see.
What happens if my connection drops?
Rejoin with the same link within a few minutes and the guide will catch you up on anything you missed.
Can I ask the guide questions during the session, or is it a fixed script?
Anything, any time. Sessions leave room for your own questions throughout, not just at the end.
Do I need to buy or cook anything?
No. This is a conversation: the guide describes the dishes and where to find them, so you can try them yourself whenever suits you.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
