About this tour

This session walks Malasaña by day, before the evening crowds arrive, from the vintage shops of Calle del Pez to the historic square at Plaza del Dos de Mayo. You see storefronts that have barely changed in decades and learn the history behind the neighbourhood's rebellious reputation. It is a calmer version of a neighbourhood usually seen at night.

We move slowly since the shops themselves reward a proper look rather than a quick pass. I explain the 1808 history at the square without turning it into a lecture, since the story itself carries the weight. Questions about specific shops or the neighbourhood's history both come up naturally.

This suits anyone who wants Malasaña's history and character without the evening crowds. It also pairs well with a nightlife session in the same streets for a fuller picture.

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 5 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Madrid before heading out.

  2. Calle del Pez 15 min

Vintage clothing shops line both sides of the street, several run by the same owners for decades. I point out one storefront that has barely changed its window display style since it opened.

  3. Plaza del Dos de Mayo 15 min

The square marks the site of a barracks involved in Madrid's 1808 uprising against French occupation. I explain what actually happened here and why the neighbourhood takes its rebellious reputation seriously.

  4. Your questions 7 min

Time to ask anything about Madrid: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  5. A short list to keep 3 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Tortilla española and Chueca, worth a slower look.

Good to know

  • A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
  • Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
  • Times are shown in Madrid time, so check the time where you are before you book.
  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
  • Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 7 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
