Plaza de España, before and after the renovation
Highlights
- Two towers built decades apart
- A square changed at ground level
- Cervantes above his own characters
- Details missed in a quick photo
- A square in constant, careful change
About this tour
This session covers Plaza de España, from the two tall towers framing the square to the Cervantes monument at its centre. You see how a recent redesign changed the ground level while the towers and monument stayed the same. I have watched this square change more than almost any other in the city I have lived near.
We walk the square at an easy pace, comparing what changed at ground level with what has stayed constant above it. I point out details in the monument's design that are easy to miss in a quick photo stop. Questions about the redesign and its reception come up regularly.
This suits anyone curious about how Madrid balances its older landmarks with newer public space design. It also works as a good starting point before heading toward the palace nearby.

Itinerary
-
Welcome and sound check 5 min
The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Madrid before heading out.
-
The square's twin towers 15 min
Two of Madrid's tallest older buildings frame the square, built decades apart despite looking similar in style. I explain what changed on the ground level after the square's recent redesign.
-
The Cervantes monument 15 min
The monument shows Cervantes above statues of Don Quixote and Sancho Panza, a popular photo spot for decades. I point out details in the statue's design that most passersby miss entirely.
-
Your questions 7 min
Time to ask anything about Madrid: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.
-
A short list to keep 3 min
Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Tortilla española and La Latina, worth a slower look.

- Sessions run in small groups, up to 8 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
