About this tour

This session circles the Prado without going inside, from the western Puerta de Goya to the newer glass extension at Puerta de los Jerónimos. You see how two centuries of building sit side by side on the same museum. I explain the design choices behind each facade as we go.

We walk the perimeter slowly, since most of what matters here is in the details rather than the whole building at once. I take questions about specific painters and collections even though we stay outside, since I worked the information desk for years. Near the end I answer any last questions about visiting later yourself.

This suits anyone who wants context on the building itself before or instead of a visit inside. It also works for viewers who already know the collection and want the architecture explained properly.

Included

  • Live video walk with a local guide
  • Questions to your guide all the way
  • A short list of places to visit later

Not included

  • Internet connection

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 5 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Madrid before heading out.

  2. Puerta de Goya 21 min

You stand before the museum's western entrance, named for the painter whose statue looks back at the building from the pavement. I explain why this facade, plainer than the others, was actually the architect's preferred front.

  3. Puerta de los Jerónimos 21 min

The newer glass extension meets the old stone facade here, added two centuries after the original building opened. I point out how the addition was built partly underground so it would not compete with the older wing.

  4. Your questions 9 min

Time to ask anything about Madrid: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  5. A short list to keep 4 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Tortilla española and Malasaña, worth a slower look.

Good to know

  • A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
  • Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
  • Times are shown in Madrid time, so check the time where you are before you book.
  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
  • Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 8 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
