Plaza de la Merced, where Picasso was born
Highlights
- A birthplace and an obelisk
- Two histories, one square
- Picasso's family, upper floor
- A general honoured decades earlier
- A short, layered square
About this tour
This session covers Plaza de la Merced, from the facade of the house where Pablo Picasso was born in 1881 to the older obelisk at the square's centre. You see how a monument to a 19th-century general and the birthplace of one of the century's most famous painters occupy the same small square without much connection between them. The route stays short, moving between the two points slowly.
We begin at the house facade with a short check of the light, then turn across the square to the obelisk, pausing to explain both histories in turn. I answer questions about Picasso's early years as we go and send a short note on the square's layout afterward.
This suits anyone interested in Picasso's origins rather than only his later work, and travellers curious about how a city marks its own history unevenly. It works well as a short session before a longer look at his museum from outside.

Itinerary
-
Welcome and sound check 5 min
The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Malaga before heading out.
-
The birth house facade 15 min
The camera holds on the facade of the house where Pablo Picasso was born in 1881, and I explain what is known about his family's time living on the upper floor.
-
The square's older monument 15 min
You see the obelisk at the centre of the square, built decades before Picasso's birth to honour a 19th-century general, and I explain how the two very different histories share the same small space.
-
Your questions 7 min
Time to ask anything about Malaga: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.
-
A short list to keep 3 min
Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Porra antequerana and Pedregalejo, worth a slower look.
Good to know
- A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
- Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
- Times are shown in Madrid time, so check the time where you are before you book.
- The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
- Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
- Sessions run in small groups, up to 10 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
