Malmöhus, a castle built under Danish rule
Highlights
- One of Scandinavia's oldest Renaissance castles
- A moat and walls from the 1400s
- A layout built under Danish rule
- Renaissance additions, built later
- Malmö's history before it was Swedish
About this tour
This session walks the grounds of Malmöhus Castle, one of the oldest still-intact Renaissance castles in Scandinavia. You see the moat, the original fifteenth-century sections and later Renaissance additions. Gustav connects the castle's layout directly to the centuries when this region belonged to Denmark.
He moves around the grounds at a measured pace, pointing out where the building's style changes between its oldest and later sections. Questions about the Danish period come up regularly, and he answers with detail from his own historical training.
This suits anyone interested in the region's Danish history rather than its more recent Swedish one. It pairs with Gustav's second session in Slottsparken, the park surrounding the castle.

Standing at the castle's edge, I explain how Malmöhus was built while this region still belonged to Denmark, and how the layout reflects that older border.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
