About this tour

This session walks May Street looking at the market quarter's older shopfronts, several keeping Victorian features despite frequent changes in ownership. You see a building that has held six different businesses within Lauren's own lifetime and a converted warehouse now holding flats and offices. Lauren explains how this quarter's buildings generally keep their shape even as what happens inside them changes completely.

After a short sound check at one end of the street, the walk moves steadily along, with time for questions throughout. Lauren answers as you go and sends a short note afterwards on the quarter's oldest surviving buildings.

It suits anyone interested in how a market quarter's architecture survives constant change in trade. It also appeals to those who enjoy spotting historical shopfront detail.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
