Opéra Comédie, the building behind the square's name
Highlights
- A facade rebuilt after fire
- Statues added during reconstruction
- A lobby glimpsed from the door
- A working opera house today
- The building behind the square's name
About this tour
This session looks at Opéra Comédie, from its Italianate facade to a glimpse of the gilt lobby just inside the entrance. You see the statues added after fire destroyed the previous building and learn how the opera still operates today behind that photographed front. It is a short session about a building that gives the whole square its name.
We spend time at the facade before stepping to the entrance for the lobby view, since the contrast between the two is the point. I answer questions about the building's history or its current season as they come up. A short note on this year's programme follows the call.
This suits anyone with an interest in architecture or performing arts history. It also works well paired with a session on the square itself.

Itinerary
-
Welcome and sound check 5 min
The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Montpellier before heading out.
-
The Italianate facade 15 min
The camera looks up at the nineteenth century facade, built in an Italian style after fire destroyed the previous theatre on this site. I point out the statues added during that rebuild.
-
The lobby, from the entrance 15 min
From just inside the entrance, you get a glimpse of the ornate lobby, gilt and red velvet catching the light. I explain how the building still functions as a full working opera house today.
-
Your questions 7 min
Time to ask anything about Montpellier: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.
-
A short list to keep 3 min
Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Fenouillette de Montpellier and Écusson, worth a slower look.
Good to know
- A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
- Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
- Times are shown in Paris time, so check the time where you are before you book.
- The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
- Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
- Sessions run in small groups, up to 11 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
