Palamidi, up the stone stairway
Highlights
- A stairway said to have 999 steps
- Bastions designed to cover each other
- The whole bay seen from the summit
- Venice's grandest defence here
- A steady climb, explained stop by stop
About this tour
This session climbs Palamidi, the Venetian fortress above Nafplio, following the long stone stairway to the top. You see the stairway's base, the fortress bastions once the climb is finished, and the wide view over the town and bay from the summit. It stays within the fortress and its approach throughout.
I climb at a steady pace, slowing further as the steps get steeper, and I stop properly at each bastion to explain how the fortress's defences worked together. Live questions come up naturally, and I send a short note on the climb and the view afterward.
This suits anyone wanting Nafplio's grandest fortress explained properly rather than rushed. It also works well as a first session before the town's other two smaller fortifications.
Included
- Live video walk with a local guide

- A short list of places to visit later

Itinerary
-
Welcome and sound check 7 min
The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Nafplio before heading out.
-
Base of the Stairway 21 min
The camera looks up the long stone stairway, popularly said to number 999 steps, and I explain why the Venetians built the fortress at the very top of the hill.
-
Bastion Walls 21 min
You see the fortress's outer bastions once the climb is done, and I point out how each was designed to cover the approaches the others could not.
-
Summit View 21 min
From the highest bastion, the camera looks out over the town, the bay and Bourtzi below, and I explain how this height let defenders see any approach from far off.
-
Your questions 14 min
Time to ask anything about Nafplio: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.
-
A short list to keep 6 min
Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Nafplio orange spoon sweet and Old Town, worth a slower look.

- The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
- Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
- Sessions run in small groups, up to 10 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
