Naples Cathedral and the blood of San Gennaro
Highlights
- A relic tied to a twice-yearly ceremony
- A nineteenth-century facade over an older church
- A family tradition explained from the doorway
- Faith and city history, side by side
- A first stop into the old centre
About this tour
This session looks at Naples Cathedral from the outside in, moving from the nineteenth-century facade to the doorway of the chapel that holds the city's most famous relic. You see the building's later front and hear about the older church it conceals, and about the ceremony tied to the vial of San Gennaro's blood. It is a local's account of a building most visitors only glance at from outside.
I start at the main facade and move toward the chapel, explaining the building's layers as we go. I take questions on the relic and the ceremony throughout, and send a short note afterwards with the dates it is next observed.
This suits anyone interested in how faith and civic life mix in Naples. It also works well as a first stop before exploring the old centre further.

Itinerary
-
Welcome and sound check 5 min
The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Naples before heading out.
-
The cathedral facade 21 min
You see the neo-Gothic front added in the nineteenth century, and I explain how it covers a much older church behind it.
-
The chapel of San Gennaro 21 min
From the doorway I describe the vial said to hold the saint's blood, and the twice-yearly ceremony my own family still attends.
-
Your questions 9 min
Time to ask anything about Naples: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.
-
A short list to keep 4 min
Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Sfogliatella and Chiaia, worth a slower look.
Good to know
- A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
- Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
- Times are shown in Rome time, so check the time where you are before you book.
- The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
- Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
- Sessions run in small groups, up to 10 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
