About this tour

This session goes down into Napoli Sotterranea, the network of tunnels and cisterns running beneath the old centre. You see the narrow stairway from an ordinary courtyard, a wide Roman-era cistern chamber, and a section reused as a shelter during the war. It links three very different periods of the city's history in one continuous space.

I move carefully through the tunnels, holding the phone steady in the low light and pausing at each period's remains. I take questions throughout on how the space has been used over time, and send a short note afterwards with more on what we saw.

This suits anyone curious about what lies beneath the streets they have already walked above. It also works well paired with a session on the cathedral or Spaccanapoli.

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 6 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Naples before heading out.

  2. The entrance shaft 17 min

You see the narrow stairway down from an ordinary courtyard into what was once a Greek and Roman quarry and aqueduct.

  3. A Roman-era cistern chamber 17 min

I show a wide chamber cut from the tufa rock, once used to store the city's water supply for centuries.

  4. A wartime shelter section 17 min

I point out where the same tunnels were reused as air-raid shelters, with old graffiti still visible on the walls.

  5. Your questions 11 min

Time to ask anything about Naples: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  6. A short list to keep 5 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Mozzarella di bufala and Chiaia, worth a slower look.

Good to know

  • A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
  • Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
  • Times are shown in Rome time, so check the time where you are before you book.
  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
  • Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 8 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
